Felt personalized photo Christmas ornaments

December 16, 2013 by Gosia

I have recently stumbled upon a cute personalized photo Christmas ornaments pattern and it gave me an excellent idea!

We’ve been living in Canada for the last 3 years and our whole family is so far away, we only see them once a year, usually during summer school holidays. So, when I saw this pattern, I have decided to make everyone a felt Christmas ornament, personalized with a photo. This way, when we celebrate Christmas at home, we can at least see the whole family!

These no-sew felt ornaments are super easy to make, you can pick whatever shape you want and decorate the way you want. They can be used in different ways, you can either hang them on your Christmas tree, use them to decorate your chimney or even attach them to the Christmas presents as gift tags!No sew felt Christmas personalized photo ornaments all2

What you need for 1 ornament

  • 2 felt rectangles 11x14cm/ 4.5×5.5inches
  • 1 piece of fabric, about the same dimension as the felt
  • Heat’n Bond Ultra Hold Iron-On Adhesive
  • photo (I have printed mine of our printer)
  • ribbon
  • scissors
  • iron
  • handkerchief or a piece of thin fabric to protect your iron
  • Butterick B4369 pattern (or your own creation!)

How to make it

I have used the Butterick B4369 pattern as the inspiration for these no-sew felt Christmas personalized photo ornaments. To be honest, I have not followed the pattern directions as is, I have adapted them a bit to make it more simple for me. At least that’s what I think:)No sew felt Christmas personalized photo ornaments on the chimney

Step1 Prepare the back piece of the ornament. Cut the felt to the correct size, if you use the pattern, then use the required piece. I have used felt rectangles and they were already in the perfect size, I just needed to cut them in half. Then, cut the Heat’n Bond Ultra Hold adhesive paper in the same size as your back piece. Preheat dry iron to silk setting. Place the Heat’n Bond Ultra Hold adhesive paper side up on the felt. Glide iron across paper side for a few seconds. When cool, peel off paper backing. I have used a handkerchief to protect my iron, just in case. Step2 Prepare the front part of the ornament. Place the ornament pattern on the fabric, but do not cut its shape, just cut the rectangle bigger than the pattern. Cut also the same size of rectangle from felt. Use the HeatnBond UltraHold paper with the same instructions as in Step1 to fuse it onto the wrong side of the fabric. Then, remove the paper and cut the shape of the ornament (you need to cut a hole in the middle – hope you can see that in the picture). Next, place the ornament on the felt piece and iron for a few seconds.   Felt Christmas personalized photo ornaments Butterick B4369 step2a Felt Christmas personalized photo ornaments Butterick B4369 step2b Felt Christmas personalized photo ornaments Butterick B4369 step2c Felt Christmas personalized photo ornaments Butterick B4369 step2d

Step3 Assemble the back and the front piece of the ornament. Cut a hole in the front piece of the ornament, leaving a thin border around the fabric. Place your photo on the back piece of the ornament as well as a ribbon and cover with the front piece of the ornament. Adjust everything well in place and iron to fuse both parts. Trim the felt leaving a border around. I have also fused a small piece to the top of the ornament to decorate it a bit more.Felt Christmas personalized photo ornaments Butterick B4369 step3a Felt Christmas personalized photo ornaments Butterick B4369 step3b Felt Christmas personalized photo ornaments Butterick B4369 step3c                     Felt Christmas personalized photo ornaments Butterick B4369 step3d Felt Christmas personalized photo ornaments Butterick B4369 step3e

Step4 I have used different shapes from the pattern with different colors of felt and different Holiday fabric. You may use your own set and create your own, personalized photo Christmas ornaments. Enjoy!Felt Christmas personalized photo ornaments all shapes Felt Christmas personalized photo ornaments all
